Begge dele fandt dog sted i den beskrevne periode. <\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During Folkem\u00f8det (The People&#8217;s Meeting) on Bornholm, there are usually more than 100,000 people present to talk and debate both the state of the country and the world situation. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During this year&#8217;s Folkem\u00f8det, four passenger ferries from Molslinjen shuttled back and forth with thousands of Danes on board. This information has been provided to Danwatch by Molslinjen.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially this past weekend, we have experienced several GPS outages and spoofing on virtually all our ferries to and from Bornholm,\u201d says Jesper Maack, Head of Communications at Molslinjen. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Det er et \u201cirritationsmoment\u201d for Molslinjens kaptajner, at de bliver udsat for GPS-manipulation og skal bruge deres backup-systemer, forklarer han.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Derfor har Molslinjen ogs\u00e5 instrueret kaptajnerne i, at n\u00e5r de bliver ramt af signalforstyrrelser, s\u00e5 skal der \u201cudvises st\u00f8rre forsigtighed og hyppigere kontrol af f\u00e6rgens position\u201d med netop radarsystemerne.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGPS is a great tool, so it&#8217;s annoying for them that they have to do without it and pay attention to positions in a different way,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a review of ship data from MarineTraffic, a large number of other ships, such as merchant ships and naval vessels from both Denmark and other NATO countries, have also experienced tampering with their signals and therefore have not been able to use GPS to navigate.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignleft dw-fakta\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"spoofing-og-jamming\">Spoofing and jamming<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Since Russia invaded Ukraine, there have been increasing challenges with manipulation of navigation signals in the Baltic Sea. This includes not only tampering with the positions of ships and aircraft, but also the complete shutdown of their GPS systems.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s called <em>spoofing <\/em>or <em>jamming<\/em>, depending on whether you manipulate or completely disrupt the signals. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This makes it more difficult to navigate freely, and it makes it harder to get an overall view of where other ships and aircraft are located.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"efterretningstjenester-peger-pa-rusland\">Intelligence services point to Russia<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although it&#8217;s unclear exactly where the disruptive signals are coming from, there is consensus among NATO countries as to who is sending them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En r\u00e6kke NATO-lande som <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defenseone.com\/threats\/2024\/04\/russias-gps-meddling-baltic-sea-demands-nato-action-swedens-naval-chief-says\/395607\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" title=\"\">Sverige<\/a> og <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/finland-detects-satellite-navigation-jamming-spoofing-baltic-sea-2024-10-31\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Finland<\/a> har offentligt meldt ud, at manipulation af GPS-signaler og spoofing kommer fra Rusland og er en del af den russiske hybridkrigsf\u00f8relse. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is also stated in FE&#8217;s latest outlook report from December 2024, in which the intelligence service writes that Russia simulates attacks and manipulates \u201cthe communications and GPS signals of both civilian and military ships and aircraft\u201d and that \u201cthese activities could take on a more threatening character\u201d. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is consistent with data from MarineTraffic, which shows that it is particularly prevalent around the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and in the Gulf of Finland near Wenzel Kristoffersen calls the spoofing \u201ca breach of international maritime security\u201d and says that the Russians are deliberately provoking by approaching acts of war without going too far. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are in a gray area of a state of war. It&#8217;s a form of hybrid warfare. We are just below the line in relation to Article 5 of NATO. An attack on navigation systems is illegal, but it cannot be considered an act of war in the traditional sense. That&#8217;s where the dilemma arises,\u201d he says, pointing out that the Russians know that they are provoking just enough to avoid being labeled as war. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the worst case scenario, the manipulation of the ferries&#8217; signals can cause the ships to lose track and run aground, says the commander. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt could lead to major environmental and shipping disasters, especially if the ships are tankers carrying Russian oil. But I don&#8217;t think it will affect Russian ships. However, I think it could cause other ships to run aground with major consequences on both a human and environmental level. It&#8217;s a real risk,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As recently as Tuesday, June 17, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.argusmedia.com\/en\/news-and-insights\/latest-market-news\/2699714-two-oil-tankers-collide-off-uae-coast\">two large merchant ships collided<\/a> off the coast of the Emirates, just one day after widespread reports of signal disruption in the area due to the conflict between Israel and Iran. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"passagerfly-ogsa-pavirket\"><strong>Passenger aircraft also affected<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extensive manipulation of signals around Bornholm and in the Baltic Sea is not limited to ferries and merchant ships.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, problems with passenger aircraft GPS signals have been reported for some time, and in some cases aircraft have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/world\/finland-russia-gps-jamming-passenger-jets-finnair-b1154505.html\">forced<\/a> to turn back. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is much more spoofing in the Baltic Sea now than before, and Jesper Maack also says that he doesn&#8217;t remember there being a problem with GPS manipulation at Folkem\u00f8det in 2024 compared signal interference, but on average we have about two incidents a week where civilian pilots contact Naviair air traffic controllers to report short-term disruptions due to GPS outages,\u201d says Naviair. This refers specifically to larger passenger aircraft, it elaborates.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the company emphasizes that Denmark also has ground-based navigation systems that do not rely on satellites and that this therefore does not pose a threat to safety in Danish airspace.
